Why is the art project called LUCA?

In science, LUCA stands for the Last Universal Common Ancestor of all living things. It represents the most recent single-celled organism from which all life on Earth - including animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and archaea - ultimately descended.

This microworld offers a space for discovery, creativity, and exploration of a world we rarely see in everyday life.

My Inspiration

I love science because it opens my mind to things I never knew existed. What fascinates me most is that science is constantly evolving: every new discovery can change what we understand about the world. It turns confusion into clarity, satisfies our curiosity, and invites us to explore everything from microscopic organisms to distant planets and stars.

Art offers a different way of exploring and understanding the world. It allows us to express emotions, imagine different perspectives, and communicate what words sometimes cannot.

This is why I wanted to merge scientific exploration with my artistic practice. LUCA inspired me to imagine a microscopic world that is already a part of us, but normally invisible to the human eye. I began wondering what this ancient cell might look like if we could see it on a human scale.

As a painter and abstract artist, I see a natural connection between the forms revealed under a microscope and the shapes, textures, and compositions that emerge on canvas. Both can reveal unexpected worlds that are normally hidden from us.

As an immigrant living in Switzerland, I have grown up experiencing different cultures, languages, and ways of seeing the world. These experiences have become an important part of my artistic language. In my calligraphy and drawings, I bring together letters, symbols, cultural elements, and visual forms from different influences, transforming them through watercolor into abstract compositions. In this way, different cultural elements come together to create something new - much like the idea of LUCA, a shared beginning from which the diversity of life emerged.

Hope

Through this project, I hope to give a visual interpretation of LUCA - not as a scientific reconstruction, but as an artistic expression of its mystery, beauty, and significance.

In a sense, we may all share a connection to this ancient beginning. And if all life ultimately shares a common ancestor, then perhaps that beginning deserves to be seen as something truly special.
